G4S Care & Rehabilitation Services (CaRS) successfully manages five prisons, one secure training centre and a number of community contracts in England and Wales. The philosophy of our business is to rehabilitate offenders and equip them with the skills needed to re-integrate back into society. About the role

We are looking for an experienced Commercial Manager to take the lead on a range of commercial activities within the CaRS Business, including contract management, variations and business improvement activities.

Reporting to the Commercial Director, you will work closely with the Managing Director along with all Prison, Secure Training Centre and Community Contract Directors and Senior Management Teams across multiple contracts.

In addition, you will deputise for the CaRS Finance Business Partner and will be responsible for providing financial guidance and advice to all Prison, Secure Training Centre, and Community Contract Directors as well as developing financial strategies and profit improvement plans for all relevant contracts.


Some of the key responsibilities for this role are:

  • To take the lead in responding to Notices of Change as directed by the Commercial Director in respect of the main client contracts, subcontractors, suppliers and Industries Contracts.
  • To implement and maintain a robust contract management system of all sub contract relationships within the business ensuring that those contracts are both efficient and effective and reporting to the Commercial Director the performance of each contract.
  • To ensure that all contractual obligations are met and that full compliance with legal and statutory contract conditions placed on the business are achieved. Raising any concerns on non-compliances to the Commercial Director.
  • To take the lead in a range of commercial projects within the business designed to improve the commercial and financial performance of contracts within the business.
  • To provide financial guidance and advice to establishment Directors and their Senior Management Teams. Taking the lead in developing financial strategies and plans for the relevant contracts.
  • Under the guidance of the Finance Business Partner to take the lead in coordinating the profit improvements plans within the business.
  • Liaise with external auditors and other agencies as needed to ensure full compliance with company and statutory requirements.
  • To act as the Investment Board Secretary for the CaRS Business
  • Collate Life Cycle, ARF and Capex proposals from all sites for the monthly Investment Board, ensuring that the appropriate business cases and investment appraisals are included.
  • To provide the investment board with the up to date financial information which includes, Original Budgets, actual and committed spends and latest forecasts, together with the monitoring of the expected return on investments.
  • Ensure that the agreed investments are appropriately accounted for with the support of the contract Management Accountants.
  • Commercial and Finance support for the Business Development Team on new business opportunities.
  • Provide Commercial and Financial support to the mobilisation of new contracts and demobilisation of ending contracts.

About you

The ideal candidate for this role will have contract management experience with Commercial experience of PFI contracts. Whilst desirable, it is not essential to be a post qualified Accountant


In addition, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to work to tight deadlines, maintain confidentiality, have the ability to prioritise workload, maintain high levels of accuracy and challenge where necessary. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must, as well as working proactively and using your own initiative.


It is key that you are flexible, work well under pressure and able to work in a constantly evolving work environment.


You must have strong IT skills, including experience of Google and Google Docs, Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
