Job Description

The Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) in Dermatology will use their specialist knowledge, skills and experience in providing Dermatology care to undifferentiated patients attending the Dermatology departments within the HIV, Sexual Health and Dermatology Directorate.

They will work as a self-directed independent practitioner managing a defined caseload of patients with complex needs for regular follow-up care and treatment, providing care which focuses on enabling patients to optimise their health within the limitations of an acute and chronic skin disease.

The ANP will inform the strategic direction of the Dermatology Directorate regarding the continued development of nurse led Dermatology care. They will coordinate effective communication across the multi professional team, between departments and the community. The ANP will provide specialist education and development for nursing staff and colleagues through education programmes, individual development programmes and clinical supervision.

We are currently seeking to employ a Dermatology Advanced Nurse Practitioner at band 8A at our West Middlesex University Hospital, but we would consider employing an experienced Dermatology Nurse at band 7 and supporting with the necessary academic and in-house training for them to become a band 8A Advanced Practice Nurse.

  • Research, compile and agree protocols, guidelines and care pathways with the multi-disciplinary team for the nurse-led clinics and services.
  • Diagnose, discharge or refer independently, managing own caseload of patients, working to agreed dermatology guidelines, prescribing as an independent and supplementary nurse prescriber.
  • Support the dermatology nurse service (phototherapy, nurse prescribing and nurse led clinics. Contact allergy clinic and nurse led cryotherapy clinic).
  • To ensure that work patterns reflect workload demand.
  • Anticipate change in practice and a pro-active approach to its management.
The ANP will directly support the nursing team and junior doctors to complete competency-based training programmes appropriate to their level. The ANP promotes excellence in nursing practice through the integration of expert clinical practice, education, consultancy, acting as a resource, developing practice and commitment to research and audit.

  • Advise the Clinical Lead for Dermatology of any issues that may affect the provision of care/treatment of dermatology patients.
  • Act as a resource to external agencies, i.e. social services, nursing homes, , health promotion, British Association Of Dermatologists, British Dermatology Nursing Group, Primary Care Trust and patient support groups to provide nursing advice on Dermatology.
  • Work within nurse-led clinics in an autonomous manner in support of an evidence-based approach to clinical practice and manage a caseload of patients in conjunction with specialist clinicians.
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Carry out consultations involving history taking, physical examination, ordering of investigations, diagnostic biopsies, interpretation of results and initiate treatment via different forms of nurse prescribing including independent and supplementary prescribing.
  • Perform biopsy procedures with agreed protocols and provide training to enable nursing staff and other colleagues to perform simple procedures.
  • To be an expert in the administration of phototherapy, photo chemotherapy and topical medications, support the phototherapy unit nursing staff, teach other staff and evaluate effectiveness of therapy.
  • Provide a nurse-led systemic drug monitoring clinic, to agree guidelines in partnership with dermatology consultants.
  • Provide nurse-led clinics for assessment and treatment of patients with inflammatory dermatosis.
  • Support the patch test clinic for patients with suspected contact dermatitis. Reading and giving written information.

  • Act as a role model and promote excellence in nursing practice as well as promoting professional and clinical nursing skills within the Directorate.
  • Be responsible for working within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and all Trust and Directorate guidelines.
  • Maintain and respect patient confidentiality.
  • Work in accordance with local and national guidelines from NICE & BAD.
  • Maintain an expert level of competence and continue with your own personal and professional development through relevant professional and academic study, masters level.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date medical and nursing notes in accordance with Trust and NMC guidelines.
  • Actively participate in your appraisal and in the development of a personal development review (PDR).
Education and Leadership
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the department as a patient-focused positive learning environment.
  • Identify education and learning needs across the multi professional team and external to the Trust within the specialist field of dermatology caseload management, nurse-led care and treatment support, implementing and evaluating both formal and informal education programmes.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the collaborative provision of dermatology education for nurses at diploma, degree and masters level.
  • Contribute to in-house teaching programmes for clinical and administration staff and support regular participation from the nursing team.
