Job Description

Who are we looking for?

There has never been a more exciting time to join UKAEA. Operated by Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, the Joint European Torus (JET) is the focal point of the European fusion research programme. Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE) is also based at Culham, within UKAEA, specialising in remote handling and automated systems.

Join our team as the JET RH Operations Support Leader. Lead the physical implementation, commissioning, and maintenance of new RHS investments. Crucial to the success of the JET Tokamak decommissioning, you'll enhance integration of RH systems within the UKAEA decommissioning program. Take accountability for the continued operation of the JET remote handling system and ensure safe utilization of remote systems. This role offers an exciting opportunity to deliver a large-scale remote decommissioning exemplar for future fusion devices.

What will you be responsible for?

As the JET Remote Handling Operations Support Leader, you will be responsible for preparing, commissioning, and maintaining the JET robotic Remote Handling System. This role includes managing the implementation of new systems and upgrades, coordinating cross-discipline commissioning activities, and resolving operational problems. You must also anticipate potential threats, identify opportunities for improvement, and ensure the team meets all safety and quality requirements. In addition, you will establish a strategic vision for the operations support team, control the maintenance program, and collaborate with other teams to accelerate the delivery of future fusion machines.

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

- Proven significant experience in management of technician and engineering teams.
- Recognised leader in the remote handling and robotics community.
- Proven track record of building relationships, networks, and collaborations.
- Ability to manage highly complex, technical systems.
- Degree or HNC in Engineering, or equivalent extensive practical industry experience.
- Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting and resolving technical problems.
- Ability to interact with multiple stakeholders across RACE and the wider UKAEA organisation.
- Proven experience in managing budget responsibilities and familiarity with modern standards in the areas of Safety, Health and Environment, and Quality Assurance. leader
- A proactive approach to safety, with good appreciation of UK compliance requirements in design, operation, anleaderd maintenance.
- Thorough knowledge of large-scale remote handling systems, their operational application and their maintenance.
- Thorough knowledge of work control systems, risk assessments and method statements.

Desirable skills, experience and competence

- Experience of delivering works ‘on-site’ under CDM regulations is desirable but not essential.
- Knowledge of JET remote handling equipment and operations.
- Experience of working with tritium and beryllium.

Please note that we offer hybrid working and this role is about plant operation and maintenance, so we will be expecting to have - 80% site based.
