Who are we looking for?

Are you an experienced UI/UX Designer seeking a new challenge? RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) is based at Culham, within UKAEA, specialising in remote handling and automated systems. RACE is seeking a Senior UI/UX Designer to support their innovative projects in the nuclear and hazardous environments field. As a UI/UX Designer at RACE, you will be working closely with robotics operators and developers to determine requirements and produce innovative designs that meet stakeholder needs.

You will also be responsible for leading the design lifecycle of user interfaces for robotic systems, following best practices, and ensuring that the design proposition meets stakeholder requirements. This is a unique opportunity to work on projects that advance nuclear fusion as a safe, clean, and sustainable energy source, making a significant contribution to the UK's transition to a low-carbon economy.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who possesses good communication skills and is a team player. You must have excellent time-management skills and be able to work independently, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure that design projects are delivered on time and within budget. You should also have an illustratable portfolio of design projects that demonstrate your expertise in UI/UX design.

What will you be responsible for?

• Lead the design and development of user interfaces for robotic systems
• Deliver high standard UI design and UX usability testing experience
• Conduct user research to gather insights and inform design decisions to achieve quality outcomes
• Define new standards in collaboration with engineers and nuclear operators on various interface elements (e.g. fonts, colours, icons, and layout)
• Create wireframes, mock-ups, and prototypes that effectively communicate design concepts and meet user and stakeholder’s requirements
• Continuously iterate and improve designs based on user feedback and collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, engineering, and operations, taking ownership of design conclusions
• Prepare and present designs and concepts to internal teams and key stakeholders and Identify and troubleshoot user experience problems (e.g. responsiveness, workflow)

Please note that international travel to customer’s and collaborator’s sites may be required.

Essential skills, experience and competence required

• Experience developing HMIs for physical systems and working independently to analyse issues and uncover requirements needed from customers
• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a design, scientific, engineering, or technical subject
• Extensive experience in user interface (UI) / user experience (UX) design and experience leading design teams and projects
• Strong understanding of user-centred design principles and techniques
• Experience in wireframe & concept design by reviewing project objectives & requirements which informs user proto-personas, empathy maps, user journeys & needs
• Up-to-date knowledge of design software (e.g. Adobe CC, Figma)

Desirable skills, experience and competence

• Experience developing HMIs for robotic systems
• General interest in mobile robotics and engineering
