We have an incredible opportunity to join us here at Phoenix Group as an Assumptions Manager, joining our Production Input Team within our Life Finance Department.

Who are we?

We want to be the best place that any of our 6,800 colleagues have ever worked.

We’re the UK’s largest long-term savings and retirement business. We offer our 12 million customers products across our market-leading brands, including Standard Life, SunLife and ReAssure, with c. £259 billion of assets under administration. We’re a FTSE 100 organisation that is tackling key issues such as transitioning our portfolio to net zero by 2050, and we’re not done yet.

The role

The role is as Assumptions Manager within the Assumptions sub-team of the Production Input team. The Production Input team is responsible for generating and validating the ESG input packages and the Assumptions tables that feed into the actuarial model runs, to facilitate the valuation of the business. We are a small team with a wide stakeholder base as our outputs are utilised in many teams across the business, and team members balance production skills with technical know-how to deliver high-quality ESG and Assumptions figures.

(Please note that this role does not provide study support.)

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:

  • Manage the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities of the Assumptions team members;
  • Lead on planning, prioritising, and delegating Assumptions work to ensure completion to deadlines;
  • Bridge the gap between project and BAU Assumptions, driving business readiness work, release activity, and planning and implementing training of the BAU team to accommodate project changes;
  • Support the members of the Assumptions team, providing them with leadership and oversight;
  • Assist the Production Input Manager and Assumptions Review actuary with investigating queries and planning future work;
  • Maintain effective communication and build good working relationships with other teams;
  • Proactively contribute to the feedback culture, supporting own and others’ development;
  • Lead team meetings and undertake people management responsibilities such as fortnightly 1:1 meetings with team members.

What are we looking for?

Essential

  • Educated to degree level, ideally in mathematics or a related numerate discipline;
  • Experience in team / people management, including planning and prioritising work;
  • Strong analytical skills backed up by a questioning attitude and a desire to build understanding;
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team as well as individually;
  • Committed to taking ownership and accountability for their work;
  • Proven time management skills, being able to work under pressure and prioritise work for themselves and others effectively;
  • A solid level of IT skills, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Desirable

  • Understanding of relevant actuarial technical concepts, ideally including Assumptions concepts, and the ability to apply this appropriately to the work undertaken;
  • A confident communicator who is delivery-focused, able to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues in verbal and written exchanges;
  • Experience of working on both BAU and projects: working and liaising with colleagues across different teams in order to achieve a shared goal;
  • Ability to recognise and raise issues in good time, as well as feed into and deliver solutions under tight timescales;
  • A proven track record in delivering quality work.

What We Offer

We want to hire the whole version of you.

We are committed to ensuring that everyone feels accepted and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. If your experience looks different from what we’ve advertised and you believe that you can bring value to the role, we’d love to hear from you.

If you require any adjustments to the recruitment process, please let us know so we can help you to be at your best.
