Applicants are invited for three Consultant posts within the Infection and Microbiology service at Nottingham University Hospitals:

1x Infectious Diseases Consultant

1x Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Consultant

1x OPAT Consultant combined with either Microbiology or Infectious Diseases.


Each post is a substantive post with 10 programmed activities per week. These posts have arisen from an expansion of Infection and Microbiology services. The posts encompass both Queens Medical Centre and the City Campus of Nottingham University Hospital.

Main duties of the job


The Infectious Diseases and OPAT (Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy) Department is based at the City Campus. For the OPAT service there will be review of patients in the Intravenous Infusion Centre, review via virtual ward rounds and face to face in clinic. There will be liaison with a wide variety of specialties. At City Campus there is a 13 bed, dedicated Infectious Disease Ward, which has seven en-suite side rooms, five with monitored, negative pressure ventilation. The ward has recently been refurbished. Patients are admitted from the emergency medical admission wards, transferred from other departments within the Trust, or other hospitals within the region. Patients with a wide range of infections are seen including HIV, tuberculosis, returned travellers, community and hospital acquired infections, and pyrexia of unknown origin. Duties in Infectious Diseases include contributions to an outpatient clinic, inpatient care and out of hours on call, in rotation with existing Consultants.

The post-holders will also be expected to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching to doctors and nurses, clinical audit, management activities and work in a multidisciplinary team.


All applicants must have accreditation in Infectious Diseases on the GMC’s specialist register, or be within 6 months of their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) date on the interview day. Those wishing to apply for the two posts including Microbiology must also have accreditation in Microbiology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Infectious Diseases & OPAT (Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy), Microbiology and Virology services are currently reviewing their portfolio of posts with a view to expansion. As part of this we have funding for new Consultant posts of 10 PAs. This Job Description concerns a post for which the main focus is to support the large and expanding OPAT service including virtual ward rounds and OPAT clinics, manage OPAT referrals and MDTs with specialties closely allied to OPAT. Depending on the appointed candidate the central work with OPAT may be combined with either Infectious Diseases or Microbiology. As an Infectious Diseases Consultant there will be the opportunity to manage inpatient and outpatient Infectious Diseases patients. Alternatively, if the candidate is joint trained with Microbiology then there is the opportunity to include laboratory duties, results authorisation and interpretation, clinical and antibiotic advice, patient consults, ward rounds and MDTs, antimicrobial stewardship and Infection Prevention and Control as part of the role. Candidates with an Infectious Diseases with or without a Microbiology background are welcome to apply.

I also consent to the Occupational Health Department confidentially accessing my occupational health records from my current or previous employer in order to check the status of my vaccinations, immunisations s and screening tests as relevant to the post.
