Lead Driver
Lead Driver Sterile Services
Stoke (ST5 7UF) | Permanent | Full Time |£12.40 per hour - Salary £24000 per annum dependent on experience and Licences held
37.5 Hours a week - plus 1 Saturday per month in a split shift at an overtime rate
To support and advise the driver team to collect and make deliveries of medical devices by car or van, ensuring the supply of sterile and / or disinfected devices to meet customer requirements. To liaise with customers to identify customer requirement and match to the logistics schedule
Our Hospital Sterile Services Unit (HSSU) transports sterile and disinfected surgical equipment to our local hospital network. If you have a full driving licence with a C1 entitlement that allows you to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), you could enjoy the benefits of joining the UK’s largest Healthcare Charity.
As a Lead Driver on our Stoke HSSU team, you’re comfortable with manual handling and happy to move transport trolleys weighing upwards of 250kg. As well as a basic knowledge of current driver hour legislation, you ideally hold a driver digital tachograph card, Driving experience is essential [prior to moving in to Lead driver Role and all competencies form Driver role must be in place
You must hold a C1LICENCE & CPC FULL TRAINING AND CARD

As a Lead Driver, you will be required
Ability to move across all shifts and maintain the driving deliveries and collections including ones self when appropriate
To act as first line manager to a team of drivers in the supply of disinfected and sterile medical devices to customers
To provide Induction, development and training and involvement in recruitment, performance reviews
To support the Transport Manager in the maintenance and efficient running of the delivery rotas and vehicles upkeep
To support the Unit Manager in coordinating a team of drivers in the supply of decontaminated and sterile medical devices to customers
To provide standby and emergency cover within the context of Drivers Hours Legislation or excessive sickness
To ensure the maintenance and efficient running of the delivery rotas, vehicles upkeep and compliance with legislative requirements
To hold regular meetings with the team of drivers to discuss local and legislative matters including; procedures relating to Driver Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), Health and Safety at Work, the Quality Management System and the transport of used medical devices by road.
The Lead Driver role will involve, carrying out routine management tasks relating to the Logistics function, and covering for Drivers where necessary.
Assisting with non-driving duties in the Unit as deemed appropriate by the Unit Manager.
To consistently present a positive and professional image of HSSU including whilst driving company vehicles and interacting with customers and members of the public.
To comply with local parking/ delivery area restrictions and requirements including delivery times, noise reduction and politeness to hospital colleagues and members of the public.
To identify, report and assist resolution of any problems that arise.
To effectively and accurately communicate with HSSU and Customers where delays to service delivery are anticipated.
To attend customer service review meetings with the Unit Manager as required and to meet with new customers as the transport representative for their unit.
Builds positive relationships with customers
Obtains regular feedback and acts on it to improve customer service
To perform customer site risk assessments to ensure the safety, health and welfare of personnel and products at collection and delivery points/ any required routes through the customer site/ premises.
To always maintain a clean and tidy working environment.
To ensure that tachograph records are maintained and uploaded to the software provided.
To ensure that drivers perform and record appropriate vehicle checks and that the vehicle is suitably roadworthy prior to departure.
To follow infection prevention and safety, health and environment policies and procedures when handling contaminated goods or moving and handling transport trollies/ boxes.
To arrange and lead driver team meetings and to represent the driver team during team briefs where drivers are unavailable to attend themselves.
To receive and action any report regarding any safety, health and environment or vehicle safety issues immediately and appropriately and to escalate to Unit Manager and Transport Manager as necessary.
The provision of work scheduling/rotas for drivers to ensure work is carried out to deadlines and the required standards within scope of Driver Hours Legislation and that the vehicle PMI schedule is also complied with and any possible impact on customers is addressed before it arises.
To ensure the team responds promptly to ad-hoc requests from other departments
To produce a report detailing fuel/mileage and any issues for the previous week. This report will be sent to the relevant Unit Manager & Transport Manager
To attend quarterly transport meetings
To act as the Health and Safety representative for the transport department and attend quarterly meetings
To take responsibility for a number of organisational, legislative and routine issues locally and to escalate to Unit Manager and Transport Manager appropriately
