  • Directorate: Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)
  • Location: UK: Remote/hybrid working - we can be flexible around this.

Job description
This opportunity for internship is within the NTD data systems unit. The programme of work will be data focused, but varied in scope. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to both contribute to our work, and learn/expand their knowledge and skills related to international health and health data. As our organisation has an international focus, the candidate will be required to liaise with NTD programme staff from across our portfolio of supported countries.

Key responsibilities:
  • Liaise with Sightsavers country staff to identify missing historic treatment and surgical data (pre-2013) to improve the completeness of our organisational datasets.
  • To support with the mapping and development of a cross-NTD programme data storage structure, liaising with departmental staff to identify key programmatic data tools and datasets, and supporting with their transfer and logical organisation.
  • To run a limited comparative review of historic data as held by Sightsavers, alongside that held by the World Health Organization (WHO), and mapping the geography of planned vs delivered treatments.
  • To support with the maintenance of NTD projects in our key organisational programme management information system, including updating project metadata and system data entry if required.
  • To attend departmental meetings and take minutes or notes as may be required.

Note, this is not an exhaustive task list. For example, if the successful candidate has workable skills with data visualisation (PowerBI), or with geographic information systems (ArcGIS), there may be additional projects or tasks that we can involve them in.

The successful candidate will be supervised by the NTD data and reporting advisor, who will be their primary organisational contact. Their first week of employment will be an induction week with daily meetings, subsequently this will reduce to weekly online check-ins, with ongoing contact throughout as required via MS Teams.

Person Specification
  • Whilst this is not a pre-requisite, due to the nature of our work and scope of this position, we particularly encourage applicants studying for degrees in geography, international development or statistics.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, to an advanced level.
  • Comfortable with manipulating large quantitative datasets.
  • Excellent communication skills: able to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders in a global team via email, and in online or face to face meetings.
  • Motivated, organised and able to manage own work tasks with minimal supervision.
  • An appreciation of international development issues and a commitment to equality of opportunity for people with disabilities.
  • Self-aware of the sensitivities associated with diversity.

Details:
  • Duration: 6 or 8 week internship
  • Hours: Full-time, or part-time over a longer period of time considered
  • Location: Remote-working, hybrid optional
