In our strategic plan for 2023-2028 we have identified the intersection of anthropogenic change and arbovirus transmission, and diversification of the disease systems in which we work, as key areas for investment.

The successful candidate will need to have a track record of working with known and emerging viral diseases that cause significant mortality and morbidity in Low/Middle Income Countries. Ideally, you will have experience working in disease systems which show clear impacts of changing climate on vector distributions/disease risk and/or working on non-mosquito borne arboviruses.

Once successful in the role, key areas of responsibility will include (but are not limited to):

Research:

  • Initiate, develop, deliver, lead and publish research, which is considered internationally excellent, in molecular arbovirology research, supporting the sustainability of LSTM and its subsidiary companies
  • Enhance the reputation, influence and profile of LSTM in arbovirology research as applied to low and middle-income countries
  • Work with and lead academics in LSTM in developing cutting edge capacity for arbovirology research, enabling the development of new knowledge and understanding in viral diseases.

Teaching and Learning Support

  • Take responsibility for the general teaching and learning strategy as applicable to own academic field
  • Lead on innovative curriculum design and development of teaching methodology as applicable to own academic field

External representation/ partnership working & income generation

  • Develop strategically important global partnerships and collaborations
  • Generate grant income/initiate opportunities for external funding, with a proven ability to attract significant high prestige funding

Leadership & Management

  • Take leadership role in policy dialogue at regional, national and global levels that help effect change based on reliable research led evidence
  • Effectively lead, manage and mentor a team of senior academic and business support staff, setting standards, monitoring progress & overseeing delegated areas of responsibility

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject area
  • Extensive knowledge of subject area informed by substantial current research in the field
  • Demonstrate an understanding of global factors affecting the discipline and work of LSTM
  • Evidence of established international reputation in academic field
  • Outstanding record of international level peer reviewed original publications and research, including in relation to low or middle-income countries
  • Considerable leadership and management experience, including the effective use of resources and budgetary responsibility and evidence of the capacity to assume further, major leadership roles within and outside LSTM
  • Evidence of strong strategic leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a wide range of staff and collaborators
