Job overview

Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a consultant forensic psychiatrist to provide clinical leadership to the Low Secure In-patient service, Bowman Unit at Bodmin Hospital, Cornwall.

The post holder will be responsible for 8 male in-patients, working alongside a Non-Medical Approved Clinician who is responsible for 4 male in-patients on Bowman Low Secure Unit (LSU). They will also work closely with the Cornwall Community Forensic Team (Cornwall CFT)based at Bodmin Police Hub, that has two consultant forensic psychiatrists in post. The post holder will work with the South West Provider Collaborative (SWPC) for Secure Services and, with the Cornwall CFT consultants, be involved with access assessments for Cornish patients to low, medium and high secure services.

Main duties of the job

Cornwall Secure Services consists of Bowman Low Secure Unit (Bowman LSU) and Cornwall Community Forensic Team (Cornwall CFT). The Cornwall CFT are co-located with criminal justice partners at Devon and Cornwall Police Headquarters, Bodmin. The Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist works with the in-patient team on Bowman LSU and with the Cornwall CFT completing access assessments for patients from Cornwall who need secure service admission. Cornwall Secure Services are part of the Southwest Provider Collaborative (SWPC) an organisation hosted by Devon Partnership Trust that covers Tier 4 Inpatient and Community Secure Services across Southwest England from Cornwall to Gloucestershire. Cornwall Secure Services collaborate with partner SWPC agencies via the SWPC Clinical Senate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician (RC) on Bowman LSU, working alongside a Non-Medical Approved Clinician in post. The current direct clinical activity is RC for 8 male in-patients and access assessor for Cornish patients referred to SWPC via the CAMBIO bed flow system. The post holder will be based at Bodmin Hospital and will provide clinical leadership to the Bowman LSU team, Cornwall Secure Services and Clinical leadership representation for Cornwall Partnership Trust regionally with SWPC. The post is advertised as an 8 PA role but if full-time working is preferred, there are opportunities within Cornwall Secure Services for additional specialist consultant sessions to 10PA.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Recognised basic Medical Degree
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Eligibility for Section 12 and AC Approval
  • “Inclusion (or eligibility for inclusion) on the Specialist Register or a Specialty Trainee within 6 months of gaining CCT”
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Higher Degree e.g., MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • Section 12 and AC Approval
  • MRCPsych
  • Completion of Clinical and Educational Supervisor Training
  • CCT in Forensic Psychiatry

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in assessing and treating mental health patients in out-patient and community settings.
  • Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD
  • Prior experience working in an in-patient or community forensic, rehabilitation or general adult Service
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working across different forensic sub-specialties or criminal justice service settings.
  • Other relevant experience, e.g. specific psychological therapies
  • Qualifications or experience in managing physical illness
