A Senior Process Scientist is responsible for monitoring and providing technical support to Wastewater Operations in Kent. This includes investigating, advising upon and implementing corrective actions to ensure compliance (legal, health and safety, regulatory) and the smooth running of plants and sites.
Provide advice and assistance across the business on operation, optimisation and investment needs of existing and new assets to improve wastewater quality and efficiency of treatment processes. Act to protect the environment at all times.
The water industry operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As such this role requires some work to be performed outside of core hours, standby frequency is typically 1 week in 8.
No budget control but may impact area operations and capex budgets through implementation of recommended or remedial actions Works within a specific regional area which may contain a large number of sites or fewer more complex sites.
Accountabilities
- To deputise for the Area Principal Process Scientist as required
- Responsible for making decisions affecting plant and processes to improve operations at sites for which they are responsible, or to mitigate risks and issues. These are likely to be on issues which could have significant adverse impact on costs or the environment.
- To monitor and optimise the operation of the WTW and downstream assets to ensure that the quality of final effluent that enters the watercourse continues to meet all internal and statutory requirements
- Where appropriate, work closely with relevant departments regarding the optimisation and improvement of the Wastewater treatment processes, including Planning and Resilience, Construction and Operations
- To monitor and analyse available data, identify risks and report on anomalies and atypical trends affecting final effluent quality and making recommendations to address these
- To undertake detailed investigations and analysis on the root cause of final effluent quality compliance failures and incidents and produce reports with recommendations for remedial actions and continuous improvement based on best practice
- Undertake regular site visits and carry out complex and/or impactful decisions on process performance and take action to improve
- Taking personal responsibility for health and safety of self and colleagues
- Agrees very complex or impactful decisions with the Principal Process Scientist and senior managers when necessary
- Has collective accountability for effluent/product quality alongside other staff on site
- Will mentor, train and guide the work of new Process Scientist and ensure that their work is completed to the required standard
- Takes unilateral decisions on technical issues affecting site(s) and raises those having a business impact (e.g. site shutdown) with the Field Performance Manager or Principal Scientist as appropriate
Key skills/knowledge/qualifications/experience:
- A sound understanding of wastewater chemistry/biology/engineering and principles of wastewater treatment
- A sound understanding of regulatory requirements regarding WTW permit compliance
- Solve operational and technical issues which are complex and not clear cut
- Must be able to respond quickly to changing business needs and prioritise work load according to deadline.
- Investigative skills including data analysis, process mapping and auditing
- The ability to analyse large and complex data sets using a variety of techniques and systems
- The ability to summarise technical issues to non-technical audiences, communicate effectively and concisely (both written and verbally) with a wide range of stakeholders, internal and external (including regulators.
- The Ability to work as part of a team, rationalise site performance and manage change effectively
Qualifications:
- Degree or higher in relevant scientific or engineering discipline
- Professional: Member of a relevant professional body & willing to work towards chartership
- Experience: Experience in technical roles related to water quality/treatment science/engineering
Salary range £37,000-£40,586
