Job summary

Thank you for your interest in the post of Retail Cashier Assistant with Historic Environment Scotland, based at Edinburgh Castle. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment.

You will be responsible for dealing with cash within the Cashier team for both Admissions and Retail. You will deliver the highest standards of visitor experience across all areas of Edinburgh Castle, working within the retail shops and engaging with visitors.

Overview of the Post and Information about the Team

As a member of the Retail and Cashier team at Edinburgh Castle, you will play a key role in ensuring the banking is prepared for uplift, floats are made up as well as ensuring that visitors have an enjoyable and informative visit.

As well as being able to demonstrate excellent customer service skills, you should be confident passing on your knowledge about the site to diverse groups of people and be comfortable using the till system for the processing of retail sales. No two days are the same, and we are looking for someone who will enjoy both the challenges and rewards of working at this historically important monument.

This post involves working on a rota of 5 over 7 days.

Key responsibilities, duties, and objectives

  • Checking the safe floats in the Admissions and Retail cash room at the start and end of each shift
  • Creating till floats and distributing them using the correct sign in/out procedures
  • Reconciling the previous day’s takings
  • Preparing the banking ready for collection by G4S
  • Filing the daily cash office paperwork
  • Flagging up any problems with tills/end of day paperwork to the Admissions/Retail Manager
  • Processing retail transactions through the till system
  • Responsibility for the retail areas including ordering of stock, pricing, rotation and attractive display of stock
  • Ensuring a high standard of presentation throughout the site, including following appropriate cleaning processes in both public and staff areas
  • Processing sales, while ensuring that all financial procedures are adhered to and carried out accurately and efficiently
  • Team participation to achieve agreed commercial performance targets for the monument
  • Promote other HES sites to visitors, and products that add to their visit such as guidebooks
  • Strive to provide the warmest welcome to our visitors and engage proactively with customer service
  • Monitor and comply with all Health & Safety procedures/guidance relevant to the site, ensuring that the health and safety of staff, visitors and contractors is a priority at all times
  • Support the team in achievement of quality assurance KPIs
  • Proactively communicate with colleagues across the site to ensure high performance, standards and consistency of the team
  • Work as part of a team to ensure the Customer Service Industry Standards and Quality Services Awards are maintained and participate in local action plan delivery
  • You will need to assist customers and visitors with varying needs in what will, at times, be a very busy environment
