The School of Mathematics & Physics at Queen’s University Belfast, is currently seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to a position in the modelling of laser-produced plasmas that mimic those found in photoionised astrophysical sources. This post, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, is available for up to 36 months in the first instance, and is based in the Centre for Light-Matter Interactions within the School of Mathematics and Physics.
The project will centre around the modelling of the spectra of laser-produced plasmas obtained at major high-power laser facilities in the UK and elsewhere, including VULCAN and Orion. This modelling will involve codes developed for the analysis of laser-produced plasmas, and also astrophysical modelling codes such as Cloudy.
The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate you have:
- A degree or equivalent in Physics or physics related subject. Must have PhD in experimental or computational plasma physics or have submitted thesis
- At least 3 years’ experience of using computer codes to model plasmas
- Experience of use and development of plasma simulation codes
- A publication record in plasma physics commensurate with stage of career.
Please note the above are not an exhaustive list. For further information about the role including the essential and desirable criteria please click the Candidate Information link below.
This post is fixed term for 36 months or until 31 July 2026, whichever is sooner. Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
